Gerrit Rietveld was an architect, graphic designer and furniture designer. He was born in Utrecht on June 24, 1888 and he died in Utrecht at the age of 76 on June 25, 1964. He was best known as a member of the art movement De Stijl and as a pioneer of the Nieuwe Bouwen. Around 1918 he started making experimental furniture, including the forerunner of the world-famous Red-Blue chair, a colored slatted armchair.
